Direct method of teaching

  1. Introduction 

Direct method in teaching of language  is directly establishing an immediate and audio visual association between experience and expression ,words and phrase ,idioms and meanings ,rules and performance through teacher body and mental skills without any help of the laerners mother tongue .

Background

The direct method also known as conversional method or natural method was developed by Maxmillian Berlitz(1852-1921) towards at the end of 19 century as an reaction to the clarification with the meaning without translation in to the native language .furthermore ,direct teaching is systematic instructional have command of the subject matter,hence this method is based on behavioralist learning principle ,morever it helps to get students attention.this method continues to the provoke interest and enthuasism today ,but it is not easy methodology to use in classroom situation  

Technique 

1)Question and answer, the teacher asks question of any type and the student answers 

2)dictation, the teacher chooses a grade appropriate passage ,play or dialogue .

3)Reading aloud the students take term reading passge plays idioms and dialogue

4)conversation practice the students are given an oppurnity to ask their own question to the other student or to the teacher learner interaction

5) Paragraph writing the students are asked to write a passage  in their own














Advantage 

1) The focus is on oral practice therefore ,the pronounciation improves 

2) In  teaching vocublary such as words,idioms ,this method is good 

3) as there is direct relation between thought and expression it help the thought and expression it help the learners in ha

4) in this method the teacher proceed from particular to general and from concrete to abstract 

5)it makes the teaching English easier and more pleasant a teacher uses various image/ picture to illustrate his/her point 

Disadvantage

DISADVANTAGES OF DIRECT METHOD

-  It is an complete method, direct method lays too much emphasis on speaking, It neglect reading and writing.The tendency is to give insufficient attention to reading and not to teach written work systematically.

- Material facilitates are not available, direct method requires the use of audiovisual aids but these are not available in a majority of our school.

-  It is difficult for explaination, the meaning of new word  is explained by Material association, explaination of the target language and use in suitable context. The mother tongue is not use although in certain cases it's use more economical and effective in telling  

- The classes are over crowded, small classes are  switable and needed for the direct method so that the teacher can play individual attention.But in a majority of school nowadays the classes are very lar
